Guide to changing fuel pump? S40 1999

Post by Aussie_S40 »

Hi all.

Has anyone seen a guide for changing the fuel pump on an 1999 s40? I'm pretty sure mine's given up the ghost.

Also, anyone know what the best part to use is? Should it be genuine volvo or is there a good alternative?

Cheers,
Michael

Hi Mike, another Mike from Melbourne. The consensus on this forum is to replace fuel pumps with something OEM.

I have tried non OEM in my 960 and it is very noisy. Longevity can also be poor.

On your '99 S40 the sender is integral with the sender. The part number 30611490 lists at $300.17 at Volvo Wholesale Parts (Volvo Dallas). Try this in Australia at a dealer and you'll fall off your chair.

Thanks mike -- that's really helpful. I just did some looking around, and this website (www.skandix.de) is saying that part is not suitable for my car. It's saying it should be part number 30630594. Could it be because I forgot to mention my car is a turbo?

(Also, I'm confused about whether my car is 2000 or 1999 -- the plate says 1999 but the VIN suggests 2000.)

One last thing: I've seen some really great guides around for changing the fuel pump on other volvos, but I can't find one for my car. If anyone knows one, i'd love to see it!

There is an access cover under rear seat in the middle. Take the cover off and then you'll see the sender and its screw on retainer ring. Take careful note of orientation of the original sender and the lines before you touch anything.
