Hi Broke Wagon,
I do not know if your HOA will approve of your landscaping idea.....
But I was doing some maintenance on my chassis/engine grounds this weekend, saw your latest post, and thought of something. It will not cost you anything but some more time sweating over the car.

Check out this link and see if you think anything applies to you. Your engine ground strap could be rotted and broken, or not firmly connected at the engine or the firewall, causing an ECU problem. A twist of a bolt could be the key to this problem.
Another idea could be the engine grounds for the fuel injection or your ignition system. Checking out your wiring diagram, cleaning the connections, and making a good ground could clear all this up. The stuff I read says that bad/corroded grounds will cause intermittent wierd stuff to happen, or just plain no-starts.
Anyways, it is worth a shot. If it ends up working, you can go spend $10 or so on some di-electric grease/conductive grease and sandpaper, and make them last for another decade or two.
Good luck,
Dave

I contacted the shop to check on the car today. They found two dead cylinders and the lights come on when you press on the brake. I had dropped it off a week ago and told them there was no rush. I'll update next week when I find out more...

I picked up my wagon today. Runs great. Shop said it needed an ECT sensor... and Power Stage.
Here's just a recap of items that I've replaced
MAF Sensor
O2 sensor
Crank position sensor
fuel relay
replaced all fuses and cleaned fuse holders
fuel filter & both fuel pumps
plugs/wires/cap & rotor/ oil filter/ oil
fuel pressure regulator
and the power stage (ignition amp), and ECT sensor...
.... so much for that trip to Las Vegas this year...

My wagon ran great for about two weeks after its time in the shop. Then it came down with a stalling problem and it led to not starting at all. I had it towed back to the shop earlier this month. They replaced the Speed sensor and the fuel control unit. Like before it ran great for the first week. Now while driving it stalls. I hear a chugging sound and there's no power and about 10 seconds later the dash lights come on. I can start it back up, but then it does the same thing. So I let it sit for a bit then it drives like normal.
I inspected the spark plugs and found them to be covered with a black velet soot. I replaced the plugs and was able to drive about ten miles then the same stalling.
I pulled one of the new plugs and there was the soot again.

My ignition switch is bad. I have to turn it slightly to the left for the wipers and radio to work. Also the coolant temp sensor code is showing on the OBD 1.2.3 ???

bump b/c I'm watching this thread like a movie...what is the soot people?! I'm dyeing to know!
Well, I wandered into this forum by mistake (I was looking for the 850's), but my (beloved, and much missed0 240 wagon developed a wierd "windshield wipers come on with the headlights" problem, and some forum member guided me to the gound strap attachment poits behind the battery (have to remove it), and under the carpet to the rear of the shift lever (mine was a 5 speed). That second one fixed it!...and I would NEVER have figured that one out without the guirdance...so get a diagram of your grounds points, and start removing the screw or bolt, sanding down the strap and body contact poits (Dremel is preferred method), adding a dab of electrical contact grease). I'm thinking that may well soleve the problem, and maybe cure a dim light here and there.
Best of Luck. I attach a picture of mine only to memorialize its loss. I was stupid to ever sell it!
