1997 Volvo 850 T-5 Stalling and Loss of Power

Post by AmazingJr »

I have a 1997 Volvo 850 T-5 and i have a problem with it stalling and revving itself up to 3500 rpm sometimes, this happens wether im in neutral, park or in drive, I know this could be a vacuum leak but i dont know how to treat it. Also this Volvo has over 330,000 kms on it, what should i be doing to keep it going? it's still very strong and very powerful so i dont have any worries yet but i would like to know for the future
thanks!

So it revs up to 3500 rpm then dives to a stall when sitting at idle? Have you checked for any codes? First thought would be idle air control motor.

Well i suppose i didnt really explain it very well now that i look back at my post, when starting the car it sometimes has a very rough idle sometimes stalling and other times it will just stop after i gve it some gas, and the car revves sporadically from 1000 to 3500 rpm, and occassionaly i get no response when i give it some gas, it just holds at whatever rpm i was at when driving.

Well to start with check out the idle air control, it can get pretty dirty and bunged up inside and cause sparadic idle. Take it off and give it a good cleaning with carb cleaner or the like and make sure it spins freely. Once reinstalled or if you have a 12v supply, make sure it's runs smooth. I believe it always runs but someone can jump in if I'm wrong. Failing that check out your throttle position sensor, any codes?
