Definitely stick with full synthetic on any turbo. Turbos can break down the oil much quicker than an NA car.
I don't think Australian cars got the SAS pump. I have four front wheel drive Volvos (one is for sale right now) and none of them have one. Also my 960 has no EGR so the authorities are less demanding here when it comes to emissions.
Torque converters can have a turbine-like sound so I hope yours is OK, be sure you check the transmission fluid while hot and engine running.
