Who owns a Diesel and runs it on veggie oil?

Post by Red-Arrow »

Guys I'm back in Scotland and need a Volvo of course. The problem is with Gas costing $9 a gallon I ain't touching a 2.3 Turbo petrol car with a very long pole attached to a very long pole. I need a diesel.

Now I am not intending to run it on diesel either as I know people use veggie oil. some filtration and acetone is all that needed right? Anybody ahead of me have any advice?
Life would be enjoyable if it wasn't so painful to live.

You need to take the glycerides out of it too which requires "washing" with potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. Do some googling there are some good guides out there.

Washing vegetable oil is part of the process of making Bio-Diesel. You can run straight Waste Vegetable Oil. I have successfully run WVO in multiple diesels (never a Volvo). You will need to filter it. I generally stretch a piece of cloth over a five gallon bucket and pour it in to pre-filter all of the large chunks of potato/chicken out. Then I filter it twice through coffee filters. You can get away with running straight WVO as long as your temperatures don't drop too low. You will be better off running a 50/50 mix of WVO and Diesel or running a seperate heated tank for the WVO so you can start on diesel till the coolant warms up the WVO, you will need to switch back to Diesel a few miles before shutting the car down to purge the lines so the oil doesn't thicken in the fuel lines/filter. Check out www.greasecar.com There is a lot of info online for DIY grease kits also.
