I've upgraded my door speakers to the Hertz DSK 130. The midrange woofer dome is 5.5" diameter, which fits perfectly on the door panel speakers. I fixed the tweeters near the side windshield A/C vents.

The tone quality of the tweeter is excellent for piano or jazz music (the ride cymbal sounds crisp and sharp!), and the bass-midrange drivers resonate low frequencies pretty well. ;-) The speaker could be installed on existing wires, and comes with two pairs of frequency splitters. :-)

Other items in the kit include screw gaskets for doors without speaker mounts, and optional speaker grilles - but the original Volvo grille fits perfectly.

Pretty good! I'm something of an audiophile, and I have installed a McIntosh hi-fi in my 940. Sounds decent, but it's not of the same caliber as my home system. I listen to a very wide variety of music, ranging from Alice Babs to Garbage and everything in between, and it does justice to all of it.

My main issue is that the door panels, although otherwise snug and tight, have an annoying tendency to rattle when playing bass in the 30-50Hz range. I've installed dampening foam, and while that cut down on road noise, it only marginally helped with the musical vibrations.

I heard our door panels are made of dried sug arcane or some kind of recyclable or biodegradable material - your 1991 door panel is probably the same as mine. The problem with this is the area where the mounting screws aren't as rigid anymore - it feels like I'm mounting something on wet cardboard paper. haha.

My next step is to get an entry level amplified subwoofer in the back. :-)

I added a 12" woofer to the system today. :-) Man, the resonance of the bass frequencies is amazing...... not to mention additional weight in my (empty) trunk giving my RWD a little more traction :-)

Car electronics really fascinate me... it's amazing only the positive lead comes from the battery, and the ground plug screws onto the tail metal and finds its way back to the battery....

I'm in LOVE with my car.. :-) I just clocked 30,000 kilometers since my odometer started running 870 days ago. Volvos are heavy duty, man!

Me also. It's interesting that the whole frame and anything attached to it (metal) is the ground wire.
