neither will my 94 850 with 146,000 miles on it idle very well except at cold startup but at least it will idle some of the time but likes to stall or near stall as often as it can when at operating temperature but as far as the inline 5 cylinder engines being almost indestructable they better be as I have to be quite viscous on the engine to keep it running at a stop light, intersection etc like a modern F1 racing car blipping the engine every 4-6 seconds between its own idle speed of 800rpm and 2,000rpm just to keep it from stalling at traffic lights, intersections etc and to get going from traffic lights or intersections etc the operator needs around about 2200rpm to keep the engine from snapping and jerking the car about as it tries to misfire at that moment under 2200rpm but it seems to run fine at road speed, I have even had the local volvo dealership look at it and they can not resolve it and think the car has serious engine issues and is in need of being replaced as they think the engine has had it but i am not so sure AND I wonder if idle mixture has been set to weak but if not that then what would you folks suggest? however the toughest and best engine volvo ever made was the 2.0 litre standard (not transverse) 4 cylinder engines that were in the 240, 244 and 740 series, also I would like to up the idle from 800rpm to a 1,000 as it was before it went in the shop as I think that 800rpm is too slow for this engine so how do I up the idle speed?
I had in 1992 until the end of 1996 a 1980 volvo 244dl saloon that was still running perfectly and quite dependable at almost 400,000 miles on it can the 850's do that?...I am of the opinion that the 850's can not live that long based on my current experience with my current car
94 850 won't idle. CE on, some work done.

You bet they will! I'm just over 200k - as is Justin - and I'm sure to reach 400k. You just have to figure out where the problem is...lord william a wrote:quite dependable at almost 400,000 miles on it can the 850's do that?

Since last post had to replace the alternator.Just put a can of seafoam in gas tank with full tank of premium gas and ran tank out ... still having same cold idle problem.. fine after it warms up.. any more ideas??jblackburn wrote:I might look more towards ignition issues actually since it's just dropping out even with the MAF. Test out your battery cables for voltage drop to the fuse box (just google a test; you'll come up with all kinds of things of how to go about doing this test), and check the wires to the ignition coil for voltage as well.
Thanks

When I did my PCV, it let loose a bunch of crime that had built-up over the years, and one big problem I had was the IAC was full of crap and throwing a P0505. Pull the IAC and make sure the valve inside flops around when you give it a shake. If not, hose it down with some carb cleaner. I'm about to pull it again to clean it as I just got another CEL, so I'm sure the gunk is just getting worked loose and clogging up the system.

I did clean the idle control valve within the last few weeks and it is clean and does rattle when rocked back and forth. The valve inside moves very freely.I am going to run some seafoam in the vacuum line and see if that might clean out some crud that might be giving me some trouble.Any one Know which vacuum line to use on a 94 850 na ???

I believe it doesn't really matter; you can add a hose to the vacuum 'tower' just for the treatment just to make sure it has the right length to reach the bottle without you having to contort your body.

Hi I thought I mentioned that I did clean the IAC and yes the valve moves freely. It hums for a few seconds when the ignition is turned on ,so I think that it is OK.. I don't have a lot of money right now to throw at this so I am hoping to narrow it down .vjaneczko wrote:When I did my PCV, it let loose a bunch of crime that had built-up over the years, and one big problem I had was the IAC was full of crap and throwing a P0505. Could the pvc system cause this. I have finally eliminated the crank case pressure and the oil coming out of the dipstick and the filler cap.The last few days it takes a little longer for it to stall out than before. Before it would start fine and immediately stall, now it will idle for about a minute before it stalls. After it warms up (about 3-5 minutes) its fine. Any more Ideas

Have you checked the hoses underneath the car? I had a very similar problem and it ended up being the big hose underneath the front bumper going to the radiator. It was slightly off and would not idle.

UCONN, I think you're talking about your intercooler hose, but Lee doesn't have a turbo.
