How much should I offer for a busted v70?
Re: How much should I offer for a busted v70?
He say's it's "driveable". I was thinking of bypassing the heater core, filling it with water and some sodium silicate (aka "water glass" or head gasket sealer) and seeing how far I can drive it before she blows. I have AAA plus, which is good for a 100 mile tow. . . I'm going no higher than 800 and walking if he sticks to his price.

I made a killing on a 64 Cadillac limousine once for the same reason. They inherited the car with no engine and I had a spare. The hard part was getting a title for and transferring the title from a dead person to me. Ya got ta love it!
Wait till you see it, if you're cool with the 800, leave the reservoir cap off so it doesn't build any pressure and good luck. He may be one of those guys who thinks every LOF was an "investment" in the value of the car or he may surprise you and be happy to get it gone. Before you offer the 800 I'd still hem and haw at his 1200 and see if he tosses out a lower number you can counter to. When I buy or sell I do the research first and the good deals I've received are usually because I could explain to someone why their price was wrong, nicely.

You can never have too big a Turbo !

The guy is supposedly a truck mechanic, and Swedish too. He lives in an apartment and doesn't have the money or time to fix it. He knows how tough a head gasket job can be, so I'm pretty sure we can agree on a reasonable price.

KBB is a joke
Try Edmunds.com for a real number.
Remember when you buy a non running car you buy at TRADE IN... minus the damage which would be:
*Trade-in $954
*Private Party Sale $1,450
*Dealer Retail $2,276
MINUS your costs to fix
Even if you use private pary, do the math:=0

I've seen several cars that people said had a bad head gasket and really just needed a radaitor/oil cooler. I guess if its a non turbo it may just have an trans cooler, but if its only oil in the water and no other symptoms? maybe an easy fix. You could get lucky.
