Upgrades for a 98 Radio?

I've got a 98 V70 withthe standard CD/Cassette setup. Works well, sounds very good. I know of the cassette-like devices that can then hook up to an MP3 player. I'm not a real audio freak but like to have a lot of flexability in playing what I want. In my other car I have an Alpine head unit that accepts a USB thumb drive and essentially that's all I ever use in that car. I don't imagine it's worth having this radio modified nor do I want to rip out a radio that works fine so I guess what I am asking has to do mostly with MP3 player options that aren't IPOD level expensive but can hold a boatload of music. Are there generic, good performing MP3 players that would work OK with the funky cassette thing for playback? Or should I just consider a new radio and sell my good one? If I sell my good one will the code I have (which works fine) work ok in someone else's Volvo?

Radio will work in any 05-2000 850/70 cars
Not worth very much though

You're best option would be to replace the stereo for max functionality. However, if you don't want to replace the radio, and don't want to get an overpriced ipod i would suggest getting a cheap mp3 player on ebay like this:

You can then buy the headphone to cassette adapter that you mentioned and you're good to go. If you shop around you can probably get everything you need for less than $30.

If you like your music, Cassette Adapters and
FM modulators are NOT the way to go.
That wouldn't be any kind of upgrade...

Do you know if that would work for the stock stereo in a '96 850 Turbo? The antenna is busted in my car, and all my CDs are old. I don't even own any cassettes. I'd love to be able to spend $60 on something like that, rather than replacing the head unit.

ehhh

My older car doesnt have a nice upgraded system. It has a casette HU. I use a $9 ipod headset adaptor and play songs through ipod shuffle.

If you aren't looking for good sound quality but just want a cheap way to play tons of music thats a good way to go

For those who need extra functionality, I recommend a radio replacement for them. Easier and usually nicer. My 1997 960 Sedan is getting ready for exactly that option. I'll keep you folks posted on it. Stock speakers are nice, only the top octave needs any assistance (supertweeters planned with the new Head Unit).
