ignition problems

Post by ctribell »

I have a 2001 S40. I am having problems with my key getting stuck in the ignition. The switch does not always return to the off position. It stops just before the "off" osition making it impossible to get the key out. the steering wheel is not locked. It usually will come out if I drive it some more or just wait a while. Do I need a new ignition switch? Is this a big deal to "do it yourself"?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

It is a well known fact that the least lubricated part of any car is the ignition lock. Put a few drops of light machine oil on the key and work it in and out of the lock a few times to see if that helps.

If the machine oil doesnt do the trick you might need to replace the actual cylinder with a new one. We can order them coded to your original key so that when it comes in you just install it and go. Hope the oil loosens it up but if it doesn't we can get you a new cylinder. Plus you get free shipping if you mention MVS!

The button is sticking on your shifter, so when you press the button then put it in park, if it doesn't release
you want be able to get the key out of the ignition, you may need to add some 3&1 oil to it.
