Front end problem S70

Post by genivieve »

Hi again! I have 2000 S70 with 179k. For the last four months I have been hearing a grinding sound when I turn to the left. The noise would go away at 35 miles an hour and over. Or if the car has been run for over an hour. It never made the noise when driving straight. I told my boyfriend about it, and of course the lazy a@s said drive it till something falls out or it dies :(

Anyways I drove the car this morning and it seemed like the car had less power, the noise has gotten much worse. I went about ten miles when it started smelling like a caliper got hung up. I stopped and smoke was coming out of the drivers side front tire. Brought it home and my neighbor put it on a jack and took off the tire.

The brakes are fine. When he stuck it in drive you can see that the wheel is hanging up not rotating smoothly and making a loud noise. The traction control guage is also coming on. The tranny has been shifting perfectly with no problems. Any ideas?

Sounds like you need a wheel bearing to me. Sorry I have no firsthand experience with this.

Tell your boyfriend; the time has come, it's broke. I agree it sounds like a wheel bearing. Not a bad job if you want to do it yourself. There's a good writeup in the repair section of volvospeed.com. The part can be ordered from a variety of places. I checked out fcpgroton.com; you can get a genuine Volvo part with all the bolts for $149 plus shipping.
