I have no clue since I don't have a Volvo scan tool. PM Tech over on Volvo Forums. He claims that he can do it with his scan tool. On my '96s I just replaced the odometer gears (and the timing belt due to uncertainty) and soldiered on. It was great to get the true mileage and correct it on the '94 though.

I did this procedure on my 1993 850 GLT and everything worked great except the ECU does not update the mileage when I drive. Maybe I am not checking it properly. It still reads the same mileage as the first time I read it. I read it twice to make sure. I also tried clearing the codes. Before I found out you could repair the odometer and advance the miles on it I had swapped a whole instrument cluster from another car and drove 148 miles on that one. When I did the repair I swapped the entire blue box containing the odometer and mileage counter and light bulbs and not just simply a gear from that other instrument cluster. I also advanced the miles to what I thought were the actual miles on the car using the pencil and drill method. So now the original cluster is in the car with a replacement odometer unit. Does anyone have an idea why the ECU is not giving the updated mileage?

Is there any way to get the actual mileage from an OBD-II ECU? I have a '96 850 base model, and the odometer's stuck at 51,723. I just got stuck with a 'not actual' branded title, and now that I know that it's a broken odometer gear, I'd like to get my local Volvo repair shop to get it fixed!
I wouldn't mind repairing other stuff, but this sounds a little too complicated to do the odometer repair!

Welcome to MVS,
The flywire came with the car and the DTC boxes are located just behind the windshield washer fluid filler.
This is specific to port A-2 but it is all the same for the other ports. Once you remove the cover you will see the numbers.

More info on getting the mileage for an 850 (mine '94). 2 small covered connector boxes between the washer fluid port and the hood latch. Remove cover to the left box (A), I used a flathead screwdriver from the top, between the boxes, to loosen the clip for the cover. The Flywire is attached to the connector and its metal tip is held in the cover. Pull tip out of the cover and insert into A2 to read codes, A7 for mileage. I plugged wire in, then turned ignition on (to position II), read codes, cleared them, turned ignition off, plugged in to A7, ignition on, read mileage as described.
DO IT, it is VERY easy and so helpful! Odometer broke at 133004 3 years ago and I finally found the energy to fix it, 185,216!. P.N. 13800 from IPD is a little plastic gear ($30) to replace in the back of the instrument pod - also easy, IPD includes DVD with great instructions.

Most of the flywires have the frayed insulation but so long as the wire is still hooked up to the plug it should work. Be gentle with it.
