I have an 85 240 replaced both fuel pumps and filter it seems to be straining to draw from the tank and the external pump runs warn after it runs for a couple min. it shuts off.. pulled intank pump and the sock strainer is almost gone . could the sock be my pr
problem? Why is a relativly new in tank pump not supplying enough? replaced fuel pump relay still acts up.I took it out on highway flat out does not lose pressure but idling from light to light the pump starts to wine and it stalls. This car has been sitting for some time and the idle seems high too.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
The sock filter is very important as it keeps the rubbish in the tank out of the pumps. If the filter has disintegrated it is probably blocking the main filter and may have found its way into the main pump (worst case scenario).
Read this, especially the reply by Kmaniac in California USA. Chris had major problems all due to a bad filter.
Bill.
