Still wondering if the axle is held in the trans by a Circlip or not, but it may be a moot point once the ball joint is repaired..
Just to clarify things.

The North American driver's side axle is locked with a circlip into the transmission, the passenger's side axle is held in place with a clamp around the carrier bearing and has no circlip, it just slides out once the carrier bearing clamp is removed.

Update, changed the ball joint & still have play (3 & 9 O'clock position) but alot less than before. I agree with Pauloil saying " Axles clunk on turns when they are bad" & they dont but, while I had the ball joint out I was able to look/see the movement of the axle & its not the circlip but;

I dont know what the (inner) axle joint looks like inside the boot (U-Joint OR Ball bearing??) but when I pull on it..I can see/feel points (like an old style U-joint protruding into the rubber boot) when tugging on it. Yes the axle nut is tight (billc1015)

I dont want to harp on the axle but just want to know if this is normal or should I be looking into the inner/outer tie rod ends ?

The axle will move in and out since the joint is a u-joint. I am still think you may have a bad outer tie rod. If you don't see the outer moving, it could always be the inner, your best bet may be just to take it to get a front end alignment (always a good idea after front end work) and they will call you and tell you if something is wrong, or just ask them to take a look at it and let you fix it and then you will be back for an alignment.
