850 will not start when cold

Our 1995 850T will not start when temp goes below 45, will start if you leave key on for 10 to 15 minutes. Codes read on module A-2 the results are 3-1-5,2-3-2 & 4-3-3, do not know if any of these are at fault. It's getting colder, so we would like to solve this problem soon.

None of your codes point to a problem that preclude the car from starting.

3-1-5 is an EVAP error. It could be a s simple as the gas cap was not tightened at some point.

2-3-2 is a long term idle fuel trim error - usually that is a bad vacuum line.

4-3-3 is a rear knock sensor signal error.

I would start by clearing the codes and then seeing what comes back.

Your starting problem sounds like a fuel pump relay going bad. This is the time of year where we always get a rash of these problems. The electrolytic capacitors in the relay age to a point where they get very temperature sensitive. You can test the hypothesis by just bypassing the relay with a jumper wire (or even a paper clip) between the socket positions associated with pins 15 and 87 on the fuel pump relay. The relay is located under the cover for the fuse box and it is relay 103.

If the relay turns out to be bad you can fix it with a couple of bucks worth of Radio Shack parts if you know how to solder or replace it. I think they cost around $50.00 for a new one but the auto parts stores all seem to want to sell you the wrong one. When you ask for a fuel pump relay they always bring up the master fuel system relay which is completely different.

Lee jumped the relay and it started right up with temp in the low 50's, will try later tonight when in low 30's, will let you know. Also note that you have '99 V70XC, ours need rebuilt transmission. My tranny man can not find all the part, I found levelten.com do you any other sources for parts or rebuilt? Thanks Jeff

I can't really help you on a parts source much beyond the shift solenoids. If things get beyond that most of us just get a used transmission from a junk yard or a place like Erie-VoVo or Tom's. Used is always a crap shoot of sorts but both Erie and Toms have a good reputation for not selling junk.
