960 1997 How do you change your Differential oil

Post by onevolvoowner »

1st time to post>

I have a 960 1997 Muti-link with reg. rear shocks with 120,000 miles. I have search this forum with any guidance on how to change my rear Differential oil, but found nothing. Volvo maintenance log request it to be change at 100,000. My after market manual has nothing also. i was hoping I was able to find a drain plug, but was unable to locate one. i really do not want to remove my Muti-link support to do this job in removing the case half cover.
Any suggestions? :(
i love your smilies.

You can use any suction tool to remove it. I have a liqui-vac which I use all the time. Many use the hand vaccuum pumps with a mason jar. You can even buy a cheap pump at local part stores to pump out the old and pump n the new.

Wayne, welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The fill plug is on top of the housing and is the only way to remove the oil. However, I can find no requirement to change the rear axle oil at 100,000 miles. The service book I have asks only for it to be checked.

If you do go ahead the refill is 1.4 quarts of SAE 80-90.

Thanks Bill for your support!! :D

I must have miss read the owners manual. I love AMSOIL products and was going to replace it. Thanks for the amount of oil to be add. The Muti-link looks to scary. It is time for preventive maintenance / plugs / oil change / front shocks / now Differential oil.
? is did i need any limited slip oil also?

The full title of the oil you need is SAE 80-90W?API GL-5. If you were/are going to use AMSOIL Synthetic Gear Lube it covers that specification and more. No additives are needed.
