740GLE and GL

Post by DeRail »

Hello,
I am thinking about buying either a 740 or a 760 volvo sedan. I have found this site very helpful in my research :) . Although, I have not been able to find the answer to this question: What is the difference between the 740GLE and the 740GL?

Also, I have heard mixed opinions about Volvos. Some people say that their volvos have not needed much work, and others say that the maintenance costs/parts are very high. My question is: if I order the parts that I need from an online parts store and install them myself, is there much of a price difference compared to what a garage would charge for parts?

Thank you very much!
I appreciate the feedback :)

I do all the work myself and my volvo is simply the best car I have ever owned. If you have the work done it can be very expensive, and sadly I have seen very poor workmanship. So I do it myself. The least expensive place I have found for parts is www.fpcgroton.com for new parts and www.car-part.com for used ones.

Some luxury features are exclusive to GLE models, for instance:

sunroof (although still optional) - handcranked or motor cranked
power/handcranked windows
power/manual mirrors....

Lockup-torque converter on GLE. (this one is actually a misnomer, because it actually refers to the converter's ability to disengage from the transmission at high speeds for neutral-like coasting and reduce engine drag at highway speeds).

GLE came with the B234F (16valve DOC), leather, cruise, premium audio etc. The GL was B230F (8valve SOC the best engine they ever made) then trim was usually cloth but power windows and heated seats were there.

Thank you for your replies, they have cleared up some of the differences in the GL and GLE. I will check out some of the sites you mentioned.

Thanks again! :)
