Hi guys! 2002 S60 2.4 150k...heard this squeaking from the front end every time I would hit a bump. Opened the hood and found the tops of both struts poking out of the rubber grommet - in the center of the three bolts where the strut comes up to the wheel well. The front struts were replaced professionally about 2 years ago...what are my options? Thanks so much! Pic attached.

Looks pretty normal to me
Take a wrench and try to twist the top nut
If they're not broken they will only move a hair, (1/4"+ or so) if either spring seat is broken you will be EASILY able to turn the nut 360 degrees

You obviously have to pop that nut cover off first

Hi JRL, it is easy for me to turn that nut...now what? What needs to be replaced? Thanks, and a happy Thanksgiving today to all! I'm VERY thankful for this forum!!
Spring seats are what you need to replace. Many people use the seat made for the XC90 as it is supposedly more durable, there may be some good ones aftermarket as well such as from IPD. I think there may be a tutorial on here somewhere regarding replacement if you are intent on doing it yourself.

oh, one more thing please - I can replace the spring seats with the strut assy in the car, right? I don't have to remove anything to replace the spring seats? I saw the video that was mentioned with the entire strut assy on a work bench. Thanks!

The strut has to be removed to replace the seat. If you're not familiar with compressing and dealing with the springs it might be a job best left to someone else. This would also be a good time to examine other suspension components while everything is apart. At 150k I'd bet the end links and and possibly other pieces are shot as well if they haven't been previously replaced.

Ok, thanks...looks like she's going to the shop. Consider this closed.
