After following the great instructions on this forum, I replaced a bad bulb in my radio. My LCD display is still unreadable at night. It displays the station but does not illuminate. Apparently those 5 little bulbs don't affect this. Any ideas?

Welcome to MVS,
The LCD display lamp is soldered into the front panel PC board and it takes a bit of additional surgery to get to it. There is a thin metal ring that surrounds the LCD display. It is typically mounted into the PC board with twisted tabs. On some versions all of the tabs got soldered to the PC board after they were twisted and on others there was only one tab that was soldered on.
At any rate you need to de-solder the tab(s) and remove the ring to reveal the lamp. It will have a blue filter on top of it.
What I have used to replace the lamp is a Radio Shack part number 272-1092 lamp to replace it and it is simply a matter of de-soldering the old lamp and soldering in the new one.

Probably easier just to buy a new (used) radio for $30-$50 bucksDreamer wrote:After following the great instructions on this forum, I replaced a bad bulb in my radio. Make sure the LCD is fitting soundly to the board - it should be flush to the contacts.Dreamer wrote:That wasn't too bad. Bulb replaced in about 1/2 hour. Unfortunately, the display now has a glitch and displays only parts of the numbers. Live and Learn!

I guess I need to take a 3rd look at this display. When I pulled mine apart it looked like I would have to take upwards of 20 small soliders loose to get to the bulb. I'll take one final look at it and see if I can just take the frame loose to get at the bulb.

I haven't had this one apart, but most LCDs have a littleDreamer wrote:That wasn't too bad. Bulb replaced in about 1/2 hour. Unfortunately, the display now has a glitch and displays only parts of the numbers. Live and Learn!
"rubber" strips between the panel and the circuit board.
Usually one at the top and one at the bottom.
If you look closely, it's made of alternating black and white "rubber".
The black is conductive and the white isn't, and the sections are a fraction
of the contact width. Usually, each contact connects with several of the
conductive segments, so lateral alignment isn't critical. But be sure that the
strips are "right side up" and you have good alignment along the contacts.
And be sure it's all clean!
Good Luck!
