Trouble Finding Cat Converter

Post by jamestkirk »

Having trouble finding a cat converter for a '98 V70. My mechanic can get it, but he said it would be $475-550. Went to Erie volvo, but they haven't had anything for over a month now, and I'm trying to avoid after-market. They will only charge $350, WITH shipping which I think is awesome, and they are guaranteed.
Any suggestions?

why cant your volvo agent get one for you ? mine gets stuff over night and if its in sweden takes 3 days so in the usa you should be able to get one in a week or so personally i'd change volvo agent.

They're called dealers here not agents and a Volvo CAT costs about $1000!That's why he's trying to find a decent used one
Erie is out?
REALLY!?

Have a quality muffler shop weld in a Magnaflow 50 state legal replacement . The can be purchased for $150 - $250 from www.summitracing.com and other performance vedors.

You can call Magnaflow or inspect their component line at www.magnaflow.com

These are the units many other vendors like IPD use in their high performance systems.

@JDS:
Would they be considered after-market though? (Magnaflow). Love the price but am worried about compatability, which I have been told from multilple sources is an issue for Volvo cat converters.

Magnaflows seem to be the only ones that work (most of the time)

Definitely aftermarket and usually allowed by state if your old one had issues or car has over 50K miles.

mangaflows do seem to work well without issue.

Keep in mind that if you cat failed, putting a new one on will only get you a new "failed one" as the cat is damaged by the air fuel ratio that the engine control system is allowing to occur. You must keep up to date on oxy sensors and any fault codes so the cat lives on.

If you oxy sensors are over 100K miles they should be replaced before a new cat goes on. The amazon link above will help you buy them cheaply. Many posts here on how to check that its the right one for your vehicle. Use the search box until you are satisfied.
