It depends on which sound system you have but, generally speaking there is a 6.5" mid-range speaker low in the door panel and a 1" tweeter up in the door handle area.

I did it both ways. The Volvo speaker is typical overpriced OEM stuff. Its also easy enough to replace (lots of posts here on methods).

For my second project, I bought Sony xPlod series 6.5" component speakers and replaced both the tweeter and the lower door speaker. The sound is outstanding.

Don't just buy a normal replacement speakers. Those are 4ohm and the stock speakers are component speakers which run 8ohm each and in parallel give 4ohm impedance to the head unit.

Here are four options:

1) go to sonic electronix or crutchfield (or some similar) website and check their clearance section for a 6.5 component system thats an open box and missing some parts. Buy that and you will get just the 6.5" speaker part. Mount that (see prior posts about mounting techniques which are easy)

2) go to Walmart.com and buy a 6.5" sony xPlod component system (not a multi-way speaker - it MUST have separate tweeters) replace just the woofer part.

3) do the same but also replace the tweeter at the same time for a nicer balanced sound (see prior posts for tweeter mounting options)

4) do whatever you did on the other door so the sound is nice and balanced

My suggestion (based on lots of such experience) is to do #3 & #4. It will cost you $60 and about 3 hours of work for the first cautious time and your sound will be MUCH better.
