2001 V70 R rare?
I recently bought a 2001 V70 R and can't find any other 2001 V70's with the R; is it rare?

Is it a 2000?
The R disappeared after the 2000 year and wasn't brought back until 2004.

Very!
No such a car.
2000 V70Rs were the last until the new R came out in 2004
Sure hope you didn't overpay for a non existent car
Post your VIN and I will tell you what you bought

It's a T5, not an R (The "53" in the VIN says so)
Where does it say R... anywhere in that description?
Someone removed the T5 emblem and stuck an R on.
A correct R tailgate says "VOLVO" on the left side then "V70R AWD" on the right side.
I sure hope you didn't pay a premium over a T5 or a 2.4T because you thought you were buying an R!

I hope someone warned you about 01 transmissions.
And that the stop-neutral update has been done to that car.

I paid $4,300 USD; so I don't think it was a bad deal and I didn't buy it cause I thought it was "rare". The interior and exterior are in flawless condition and the car has already had it's healthy dose of transmission updates. It goes to the shop next week for a transmission flush, B4 cover update (shift flare between 2-3), along with a spring strut repair. I did however notice the other day there is some antifreeze under the driver's side floor-mat; looks like a new heater core is in order. Still pleased with my purchase! Every time I buy a Volvo I have to put at least $800-1000 in repairs; most of the time it's a fuel pump or computer issue though. Anyone have anything good to say about the 01's?

The good thing about the '01 is that if the valve body must be replaced a transmission builder told me the '03 valve body can be fitted with a wiring loom kit to extend the wiring to one of the solenoids which apparently is further away for the '01 loom.
The valve body is available as a genuine OEM part from Volvo for just over 1 grand. With the updated valve body you should be fine.
If the B4 cover update doesn't fix the 2-3rd shift flare this is your next option. I too have a early 5 speed (in a Gen 1 body) that I am having the 2-3rd flare problem with. I am about to do the B4 update as soon as funds permit.
