S70 t5 odd problem...

Post by cjbmustang »

When I pull the key out of the ignition, the dome light(s) should turn on. As of about 2 weeks ago, I noticed when I pulled the key out, the lights flicked on and off and the doors locked. Thought it may have been a fluke, but it's been doing it a lot more frequently. During the summer, the chime also stayed on a few times while driving until I got where I was going and pulled the key out. Jiggling it did nothing. Which reminds me of another symptom; When I turn on the engine, the lights/HVAC blower/etc do not work until i twist the key back slightly.

What part am I looking at replacing?

I used to be able to turn the key to the off position and keep rotating a few years ago...some reason that stopped.

Thanks,

Chris

edit: it's a 1998

Hmm, it sounds like both parts of the ignition switch are going. The key spinning around is the mechanical part (tumbler/steering lock); the having to twitch the key, etc for the electrical stuff is the electrical portion of the ignition to the left of the steering column/

A bit of graphite lock spray and putting the key in and out of the ignition can free up the little tab inside that keeps the key in or turns the lights on/off if you don't want to yet take on the problem of replacing the whole tumbler if the key isn't spinning around in place.

I'm now in a parking lot and my key will not turn past the first notch on the ignition. If I take the column apart is there anyway to bypass this? Or is the tumbler the culprit? P.s. I'm angry.

You need a new ignition lock/cylinder
If you want the same key as the doors you need to order it from Volvo, they are made in Sweden and sent.
Takes about a week to 10 days and at retail not that cheap.
Sort of a messy hour or so job, you have to drill out the old lock, (very carefully)

i hit the ignition lock with a socket wrench and it works. i sprayed some graphite lubricant in there also. seems smooth. can't wait for it to do it again! (sarcasm)

Sounds like you need more than one part buy I would try this one first and go from there:

Your local dealer can provide the combo on the lock - via the VIN number (providing no one has changed them before...) I an S70 and V70 that had those symptoms, a little graphite spray fixed both of them. The tumbler being sticky can cause the switch to not return to the ON position and hence the need to 'jiggle' it. The trick is to use a little, I spray the key and give the lock a shot, then do the funky with the key a few times to mix it up good.... Usually works and is a whole lot less $$
