'89 240 GL engine shuts off unexpectedly. HELP

Post by Doug 64 »

:? :? Hi all, New user here. We have had 4 Volvo 240s over the years. Great cars!! Now my 16 year old has a '89 240 GL. It's a beater, doesn't look great but has a great interior and runs well 99.9% of the time. Here is the problem that maybe someone has experienced.

At first this problem occurred only when going very slowly like in a parking lot or coasting down a level street. It does not happen with any predictability and it is not consistant nor can we make it happen. Then it happened when the car was just sitting in park and idling in the driveway

While driving along, the car simply turns off. No sputter, no warning. Just like the key has been turned off. Last night for the first time it happened under a load as my son was getting on the freeway and heading up a slight incline over an overpass. He was taking the car to the shop for this problem and since it never happened under a load or at speed we thought it was OK to be on the freeway. Bad choice and pretty scary for him.

Here is the only thing that is weird to me but may be a lead to the problem. When the engine does stop, it will crank but not start. If it sits for 20 to 30 seconds it starts just fine. It's like some relay or something resets itself.

If there are any ideas out there it would be greatly appreciated if you can share them with us. Thanks, Doug and J.B. in Houston

Doug:

Sounds like the classic fuel pump relay problem. See my Mar 17, 2006 posting and others. Do a search and you will find quite alot of items on the relay. It can be fixed easily with a new unit or even resoldering some connections on the relay. You can review the same issue on "Bricks" that has photos and discusses the resoldering. I will send some photos to your email that you listed.

That is my guess before you go off spending alot of money chasing other items.

Peter

Thanks Peter. I have been searching the forum for the last two hours and have found several accounts of the same tale of woe. Any help additional info you can send along would be great. The Volvo specialists have had the car for two days and have no solid ideas at this point so your letter is very welcomed

Thanks
Doug
