Just cleaned my mirror switch as KRUDGE suggested above and BINGO, it works great!
I also have the gummy switches and so far alcohol, Fantastic and GooGone didn't work. Next I'm going to try an adhesive remover commonly used on fiberglass boats called Interlux 202 Solvant Wash. What is this stuff?
1998 V70XC Power Mirror Switch
To add on to the de-greaser comment I just cleaned mine up really quick with a cotton swab and some "butchers speedball" power cleaner. Now my switch looks shinny and worn like the almost 200K that's on it. But no more of that tacky gooey stuff. Next I have to hit turn signals, wiper arm and window switches. As for speedball... we used to use it at work before they wanted more eco friendly (non-effective) cleaners. It was the go to when nothing else worked. Took gunk off where nothing else would and took stains out when nothing else would. Lets put it this way... Hawaiian punch stains came off the counter. With elbow grease you could get old duct tape off. Can't be sure how it would work on porous surfaces tho.
While poking around at this switch and the door switches I figured out how to take them off and apart and might just get around to making a write-up on them. However I have to figure out how to get pictures off my phone and on the computer. NO data cable, and no blue tooth on the compy
.
So to add a question to the thread... if I find I have no power to the mirror switch (currently looks like the case), but I do have power to the window switches where should I be looking? Do I really have to take the door apart, and if so where can I get a mess of those plastic door holding bits that I seem to always break on the donors in the junk yard? Not to mention some feel broken on my door trim as well.

Much more than you ever wanted to know about your mirror switch.
If it’s yours clean it up with alcohol or get a used one $30 ebay, $5 junkyard
If it’s SWMBOS, thank the Creator for a partner who drives a 20 year old car and get a new one from FCP for $60
Pop out window switch
Pop out mirror switch
Route wire into connector
Click!!
Push them both back in
Blunt Swiss army knive works to pop the switches. Note location of metal spring catches
