Is CEL Code P1171 related to ETM Problems?

Post by AP »

Got a 2000 VOLVO S70 GLT with 132K miles on it. All of a sudden the CEL came on with code P1171 (Fuel Adaption, Bank 1) and the car is idling very ruff and stalls sometimes when the engine is cold?
Could that be under the 10 year ETS Warranty?

P 1171 is probably not related to ETS. Check your vacuum hoses and air intake hoses for a leak.

Just did a Google search on your code and lots of folks had this code with a bad Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Try unplugging the MAF connector and see if it cleans up the connector, or idles better with it unplugged. I think your car substitutes a default value when it's unplugged

The mass air flow meter and the ETM both measure the air flow. The mass air flow meter actually measures the flow through it by a hot wire aneometer. The ETM by a 'look up' table that says something like, "if the throttle is 40 degrees open the air flow should be 30 cfm" If these do not agree then it can set a code. But which is the real problem. I would suspect the ETM. If you replace the MAF at your expense be sure to keep it so it can be replaced if it is not the problem.

I had my ETM for free at VOLVO and the CEL went out. I've been driving the car for 3 days now and the car runns smoother when the AC is on. Also the ruff idling disappeared with the upgrade. All good stuff for my car!
thanks for all the good info!
