A/C DASH CONTROL ..HELP!

Post by Emmette »

My ac is not putting out cold air and it's hot here in Ga. I'm convinced that it's a bad switch in the dash control unit and when I called Volvo for a price for the part they wanted $963.00. Thats nuts. I believe that if I make a connection between two terminals that the switch normaly makes then it will work but I wanted to see if any one had other more permanant solutions before I attempted this.

That price is pretty close to what I was quoted for a bad compressor. It was seizing up and wouldn't blow cold air. Maybe this is what they figure it is even though you told them it was the switch. I had to have mine taken in to the dealer for them to run tests on and they had to jumper some wires and watch/listen for the compressor to seize up. I hope yours is something simpler, but it may be worth it to go in to the dealer and pay the $50 for a diagnostic. Is yours the ECC with auto everything or the other kind?

Ok so without any one having any ideas on this one I began the search myself. Found the complete unit for $130 to $ 160 at several used part yards on the web however was able to purchase just the switch unit for $124 new at volvo.

Why do you think it's the switch? Do you get many blinking lights when you first turn your car on? If so, it could be a preostat which is under the glove box or the blower motor itself. There could be other causes as well. Please post more of the symptoms and why you suspect it's the switch.

When I made a direct connect betwen the terminals the a/c came on so I knew that it had o be the switch and only after telling volvo that I wouldn't be willing to pay $963 for the whone unit did they offer to sell me the switch. Nice

Hi, guys... (My first post: HI! ^_^ :D )

Okay.. I have a '93 850GLT that I have loved nearly to death. She's got 240K miles and some things are starting to go bad, i.e. the fan switch on my dashboard.

My a/c compressor and the fan work fine, but the fan will not turn on unless I move the tab to "4" (high). Otherwise, I can feel cool (or warm) air being forced through the vents as I drive.. So my question is: are the fan switch's contacts just dirty or is the switch completely blown?

If the contacts are dirty, can I take the switch ass'ly apart and clean it? Has anyone else had this sort of problem?

Thanks in advance! ^_^

I think there are 2 separate relays from what I understand....one for the low fan setting and one for the high. I would suspect the low one is bad, but I'm not sure where to find them...I believe in the dash near the fan, but I haven't opened up the area in awhile and can't recall.

Bought the switch from Volvo only to find out that it was for a manual controlled a/c system and mine is automatic. They don't make a replacement for the automatic So I went ahead and hard wired the connection with a drop of solder. That worked however every 10 to 15 minutes while driving in hot weather the ac quits blowing cold .I turn the system off for a few and it then gets cold again..Any ideas?
