S40 Cold Start Problems...

Post by blinkwatt »

2001 S40,auto w/ 140k on it..

My s40 takes 2 tries to start up when it's cold outside. It cranks strong(starter and battery replaced already),but it take dies as soon as it starts on the first crank, all is fine on the 2nd crank.

No CEL.

Any takers? Shop already had the car, they said it started up fine for them for 3 days,go figure the shop opens at 10am and it's warmer by then already.

I had a similar problem to yours on my 2005 S40. I had an electrical issue. I thought it was the battery! There was an electrical draw draining my new battery. Hope that helps.

Was your related to cold starts only as well?

My guess is that it's somehow related to fuel distribution. Could be the fuel pressure regulator.

I swapped the fuel pressure regulator. Car seems to start little better in general. Tomorrow morning will be the test when it's 35 our, when the car always stalls first try.

Car starts on first try now...not flawless but it does. There is like a slight hesitation between the cranking of the alternator and the car firing up.

That's great. Hopefully that solves the issue. I had the same problem recently. I replaced the battery first, which made no difference. When I did the repair, the little plastic filter on the old regulator was actually cracked and misshapen.

Another thing I though of yesterday, but forgot to ask: Have you replaced the fuel filter recently? Might be time for a replacement. Those things get gunked up with deposits and can cause problems. If you are going to replace it, from what I've read, people on this forum typically recommend using OEM fuel filters. I think mine was a BOSCH.
