850 Intermittent Starting - Ignition Switch?

Hi All,

My 850 wagon (now at about 375K miles) has developed an intermittent starting problem. If I turn the key all the accessories and usual dash lights turn on then nothing happens in the start position. Then I'll try it again and eventually, magically it starts and runs as fine as it usually does with all accessories working. From reading posts I'm thinking the problem is the ignition switch but since all the accessories are ok I'm wondering if there's anyting else it could be that I might check beofre I go buy a new switch.

It could be the starter,relay (if there is one) or solenoid ? You need to test the output of the switch with a multi meter to determine which component has failed. Start at the switch, as it is almost always the switch, and see if it fails to produce 12vDC when you are having the starting issue. If the car is not starting and the switch is producing 12vDC on the starter wire then move down the wire with the meter and see what is failing.

#1 Starter. They are intermittant sometimes before total failure. These cars also have a problme with the PNP switch. Search PNP and see if that helps.

Congrats on the high mileage. I wonder what your compression numbers are? How much oil do you burn?

Thanks guys. I'm going to check the switch tomorrow and if its working I'm going to suspect the starter and get it replaced. I don't think mine has the PNP as its a manual. As far as oil burning I'd say 1qt/1.5k which is fine. Its been the best car I've ever had and I bought it with 335k mi on it.
