what trans fluid to use
can anyone tell me what gear oil to use in a 96 850 with 5-speed manual trans. i was told to 5w30 synthetic engine oil, just don't sound right to me.
that really doesn't sound right. I was having some problems with that a while back and was told to use regular "gear oil" at O'rielly's. Luckily what was up with mine was under warranty and they used volvo stuff. I would call the dealer and ask if in doubt, but would not put motor oil in without talking to a pro first. The gear oil looks a heck of a lot thinner and lighter in color than motor oil, almost like watered down brake fluid.

I looked it up on Alldata for a 98 S70 and all it says is use Volvo synthetic transmission oil Part number 1161423-7 or equivalent. It only takes just over 2 quarts (2.2 qts). I would just go to the dealer and get the Volvo stuff.

The recommended oil for a 1996 850 with manual transmission is Volvo synthetic gearbox oil 97308. It takes 2.1 litres.
