Can someone tell me what this noise is? (video)

Post by RockVegas »

I have a 99 V70XC with 220K on it we just bought. It's been well cared for, seems to run fine, drove it two hours home with no problem. Shortly after that we heard a horrible screeching sound when she started the car. It's only done that twice. Now, seemingly when the car is warm and started it makes a rattling sound. It seems to be coming from the rear of the motor, but I just can't isolate it. It lasts a few seconds after starting, then you won't hear it again while driving.

It's also throwing a code for a 'large emissions leak'

Here's the vid:

Did you check to make sure the heat shield has all its bolts and they are tight.

That said it does sound like a leaky exhaust manifold whether it's cracked it just loose.

Not yet but when she gets back here I will. The odd thing is once it's started, it does it, then stops. No change to RPMs makes it happen again once it's done.

I had a Honda that did the same with a cracked manifold. The temperature variance causes contraction and expansion sometimes letting it leak and other times it sounded perfect.

Shields sound loose along with a underlying turbo noise.

Let us know what it sounds like after the shields are tight

I was kinda worried about the turbo having some bearing problems or something. It also made a really loud screeching noise twice recently and I wasnt wondering if it was related. Sounded,... kinda sorta in the turbo's area. I had my wife cut the car off when I heard it, it sounded pretty damn bad.

Remove the inlet pipe to the compressor side (silver side) and check the turbo shaft for in and out and up and down play.
Let us know what you found.

Did you find out what was causing the noise? Was it the manifold or heat shields? mine is doing it now.

my 96' 850 made the same noise...I looked under the rear doors and saw that the heat shield between the gas tank and the exhaust system was COMPLETELY UNATTACHED as in literally sitting on top of the exhaust system, with nothing holding it anywhere
