2000 Volvo S80 Starting Problems

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 Volvo S80 Starting Problems

Post by lil pyro »

Hello, New here.
I recently bought a 2000' S80. I bought it in hoped of making it run. However I am getting quite I head ache, and this forum seems to be the best place on the web.

2.9 NON turbo.
When try to start the engine, it spins SLOW. So I tryed to turn over with NO compression( spark plugs out). It was the same speed just smoother. So i payed 200 bucks for new starter. About twice as fast but still kinda slow. The battery died within 6 seconds of turning the key. I need to get a new battery.

I will do that tomarrow, but a noticed something. I the lady said something about it needing a new crank shaft and Cam shaft(I know right?) But I realized maybe she was talking about the sensors. I read that the starter cable can make interferance (the tach jumps to like 2000 RPM when attempting to start) so I wrapped the starting cables and crank sensor with aluminium foil. But it still jumps around. I will get a video tonight. I would REALLY appreciate it if I could solve this.

***Update
Okay After getting a new battery it cranks much faster. Probably normal speed now. IDK So I made a video. But no luck. The tach still jumps so Tomarro I am going to replace the crank position sensor.

Here is the video. You can see at 1:09 it backfires. I was hitting the gas.
at 1:36 you can see the speed of cams.
I would really appreciate the help.

Can anyone tell me if anything is missing from the fuse box? I can find a manual.

Only 'manual' available is VADIS on a CD which you can buy on ebay for few bucks.

Have you had any codes (DTC's) read? If so, what are they?

Fresh gas? New fuel filter? Have you checked if you are getting fuel pressure at the injector 'rail'?

I agree you should see if you are getting any spark from the coils.

*Update*

I have replaced the crank position sensor, and wrapped all starter power lines with aluminum foil. also checked for spark: positive. fuel injectors: positive. the computer is giving no engine/mechanical related error messages. It cranks just as fast, but only cranks for about 10 seconds or so before the battery seemingly "runs out" on a brand new battery. All visible engine grounds have been removed, cleaned, and put back on. the tach still jumps to around 1000-1300 rpm max when cranking. for the most part it stays around 300 rpm when cranking though. Ive looked around and checked that all visible connectors are connected. all fuses in the fuse boxes are good. but, it appears as if there is alot of empty space where the relays are, can anyone give a picture of the fuse box(es)? also, the engine backfires occasionally when cranking also. thanks!

I really want to get this car going and drive it! haha. but im stumped on why it won't start.

any suggestions/help would be greatly appriciated. thanks!

I looked and cant find any timing marks. Do I have to pull the engine to check?
