2001 V40 hard starting issue

Post by newdad4132010 »

Hello all,
I recently purchased a 2001 V40 with approximately 155k miles and I am having a problem with starting the car. It has to crank for about 4-5 seconds before starting this doesn't matter if the engine is warm or cold the only thing is once it has been running (even if only running for a few seconds) and I shut it off if I start it again within 2-4 mins it starts fine 5-10 mins and it will almost catch but then have to crank the 4-5 secs if it has been sitting more than 10 mins than it won't almost catch just crank 4-5 secs before starting. Here is a little history on what I have done so far:

1.Replaced starter (the bendix on the old one was completely shot probably from previous owner's excessive cranking).
2.Changed the oil, new air filter and tranny flush.
3.I also had to have a new braded section of the exhaust welded in as the old one was completely broken. The shop that did the weld said it smelled like I was burning a little anti freeze does this indicate a failing head gasket and what should I look out for?
4.I also replaced the fuel pressure regulator with one from a junkyard and it has not made any difference.

I do have a check engine light that came back with 3 codes 2 of which I have already taken care of:

P0507 Idle Control System RPM Higher Than Expected
- Replace IAC valve with one from junkyard and code has not come back also idle has smoothed out and has no more high idle issues

P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected - replaced spark plug on cylinder 3 and swapped the coil packs and wires around and code has not come back.

P0133 O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
- I have ordered a new O2 sensor and will be replacing that when I get it.

I also tested the fuel pressure and it was around 41-42lbs but i did notice it dropping within a few minutes ans someone told me I might have a bad check valve in the pump if anyone can offer any more info on testing for this that would be great. I would like to make sure it is that before ordering a new pump since they are pretty expensive.

If anyone can offer any insight as to what it might be I would greatly appreciate it. I am willing to try anything I am just not sure where to try next.
Thanks in advance for any help
Justin

Can you confirm the location of the fuel pressure regulator? I was told that it was located in the fuel tank, but also saw somethings about the fuel rail too. I am having the same problems newdad describs above and was informed to replace the fuel pressure regulator also.

The FPR is located on the fuel rail. There are pictures of it in my post here. The fuel line I ask about is connected to the FPR. There's a write-up over here.
