p0722 and p1618 trouble codes 1999 S70 T5

Post by Ferrisml »

I installed a rebuilt ABS module from module masters, I disconnected the battery with the key position in the II position, removed the relay, replaced the unit, connected to battery, put in the relay. The ABS the blinking up arrow lights are now all off and the speed meter dashes are all gone and working fine. I drove the car 80 miles the ABS is RESPONDING FINE.The check engine light is still on, trouble codes now say P0722 and P1618, I was told that it has to do with the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) in the transmision, another guy told my that it has to do with the speed sensors on the wheels, so naturaly I'm confused as to what is really the problem ?

That P0722 code is a transmission code...it is for the transmission speed sensor, not the ones at the wheels.

The P1618 turns on the CEL to say "hey, there's a problem with another system", in this case, the transmission control unit is throwing a code.

I can't really find a whole lot of information on issues with that code, but I suppose you should have a look at the wires to the sensor. If it looks OK, you should replace it.

It's located at the back of the transmission housing, and visible from the top of the car. I'll try to find you some pictures here in a moment.

The other thing people suggest is a bad transmission ground wire.

Ok all fixed, it was the speed sensor, I found one on the net @ http://www.koperformance.com, it was a true Volvo part for 87.00 US. I also found out by just driving the car about 70 miles will not reset the light you still need to use the "Clear Codes" button on the diagnostic reader for it to go out.

Resurection of an old thread.
The link does not confirm (for me) which sensor he's referring to, is it the vehicle speed sensor off the tranny?

I have the same code, we just put a new ABS module in and I'm now stuck with P1618
(Everything else is fine, all other lights are gone)

The 1618 rarely goes away on it's own. I've also found that quite a few generic OBD readers won't clear it.

I've had the 1618 issue a few times from running different bad units in the s70, but I haven't had a problem clearing them with the two scanners I use. My innova always cleared it and so does my newer autel.

BUT...my 1618 always came from a bad module. Sometimes it is a TCU issue.

Your ABS module removed all ABS codes and glitches (no speedo etc)
What I have left is this from VIDA (run just a few minutes ago)

CDM-0001 Vehicle speed signal )VSS) signal missing, (DTC not active)
CDM E000 Control Module Communincation (DTC not active)
TCM-001F Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) Signal missing (DTC not active)

What's odd is that I have both printouts, the one from a half hour ago and one from the 31st
They are exactly the same but with the old ABS module it was lit up like a Christmas tree, now only a CEL

This is way beyond my pay grade.
My mechanic is digging up all that is available from Volvo (tech notes) and is starting to fault trace.
So far nothing with the external wiring seems bad.
Have to borrow an ECU/TCU removal tool and check those connections next
If everything is OK then I'll buy and try that sensor, but I'm not just going to start throwing parts at it!
