Definitely a possibility.
Yank the plug and see if it will drive around. You'll get a check engine light, but you can easily reset it.

the check engine light is already on and read problem with MAF...i will pull the plug now and test it real quick. How do you reset the light, by the way?

awesome thanks.
OK, I disconnected the MAF and started the car. As soon as I put it in gear, it would die. I reconnected the MAF and it started and ran fine.

Clean the sensor, clean the connector, and fasten the connector down with a zip tie.
Clear the check engine code and go drive it. If it still acts up - dying, bucking, etc. - the sensor is just on its way out.

Has anyone used or bought a Cardone remanufactured MAF sensor? They are the only ones available in my area that I can go pick up. Thanks

Aftermarket sensors DO NOT work.
You'll need to order a genuine Volvo or Bosch sensor. Check out the online parts vendors at the top of the page (IPD, FCP, MyVolvoParts)

OK good advice, found a decent priced Bosch for $164 with free shipping. Going to clean connector and if it still acts up buy a new one. thanks for all the help!

I cleaned the MAF again, cleaned the connectors and now it runs worse than ever. Will barely drive without cutting out every 50 yards. I guess I will have to order a sensor.
Also...checked the check engine light, followed the instructions...it showed no fault 1-1-1 i cleared it all but my CEL is still on.

This is the one thing about this thread that doesn't really make sense. When you unplug the MAF, the car should go into a default mode where it runs fine. Maybe a little rich, but it should not die when you put it in gear. And right now with it running worse than ever, it should improve when you unplug the MAF.850TurboWagon1995 wrote:awesome thanks.

So I am not really sure the MAF is the problem. Just something to consider, because $165 is not cheap if it turns out to not be the problem. Ideal would be if you could swap in a known, working MAF to test.
