Try seaching this forum on how to replace the rear shocks, there is a very good article on it. You do know that you have to remove the rear deck pannels to at the screws ( 2 8mm I think ) then push it forward and remove pannel. the key to getting the mounts out is to work it slowly a couple of turns out until it feels tight, spray it wilh PB or your chose of lube. it's a kin to retapping the threads cause you definitely don't want to break them, again go slow. took me about 4 hrs to get mine out. Hope this helps

Unless your upper mounts have broken there is really no reason to remove them to replace the shocks. It is literally a 2 nut job but you need to be careful.
The upper nut is a minor bear since you need to hold the shock at the same time that you remove the nut. i use an open end wrench for the nut and a crescent wrench to hold the shock on the flats to get that nut off.
The lower nut is where you need to be careful. We have had several members that have broken the stud getting that nut off and that pretty much means a new delta link trailing arm. PB Blaster 24 hours in advance is a good start and slow and steady pressure is the way to go. Don't try to use an impact wrench and if you are using a ratchet or break-over bar don't yank on it.
Beyond that everything is easy.

OK, so the bushing in the end link has wore out, that is the noise I was hearing and thought it was the shock. I know this is a major PITA to change just from what I've read, but will it last another couple of months until I can fix it? (Not a whole lot of fun laying in the driveway in the winter) I can feel it shift when i change directions, maybe packing it with grease for now?

Grease won't really do you any good. In short, you can indeed run with rotted out end links. The car tends to drift a bit and the clanks and clunks are irritating but there is really no chance that they will completely fail and come loose from the frame.

I wrote up a step-by-step on the rear shocks for the wagon style a few months ago and it is here:
