Rain Squeal Fix Guide

Post by fazool »

(Thanks to several experts here who immediately pointed me in the right direction when I ran into this problem)

(My apologies for the pictures being misplaced in the text - I am hving trouble with the uploading process for the moment)

The problem here is a design flaw on P-2 series AWD sedans whereby the exhaust system is too close to the propshaft. Under just the right set of circumstances, these can interfere, causing an extremely loud grinding/ringing sound as the front muffler rubs against the rotating propshaft.

Most commonly, this seems to occur when the exhaust is warming up and then splashed with slush/ice/water. The sudden uneven cooling on one side of the exhaust pipe, causes the whole system to distort. Essentially it acts like a giant thermostat - expanding and contracting different on different sides, resulting in a visible bending.

When this happens, the lip of the muffler presses against the driveshaft, leaving a lathe-like groove.

Volvo knows about this design flaw but is not covering this under warranty (personally, I am appealing to VolVo Cars of NA for some relief on the repair parts). There is a service bulletin, attached below. The parts kit I got from my dealer was a different number, but did have all the right parts.

The old hanger system is comprised of a simple crossmember with one single hook and a rubber exhaust hanger. This suspends a hook welded to the exhaust pipe.

The repair is easy enough (in theory). It's only three 10mm bolts but there are some challenges I wanted to warn you of. My "ten minute repair" turned into ten times that because of annoying little things. Hence this write up.

There is very little room under there because you are working at the centerline of the vehicle. I don't have a lift or tall ramps so I had to double jack my car up (max height from jack, install jackstands, put jack on blocks and jack again). This is very dangerous and must be done with extreme caution. I had two jackstands and two sets of large safety blocks made from RR ties, in addition to the chocked wheels and floor jack. Be careful.

Once under the car, removing the old hanger system is easy. Two 10mm bolts which are not very tough to remove with a simple hand wrench.

A problem I found was that there already is a hook on the exhaust pipe and it is in the way of the new bracketry. After installing, removing, reinstalling and re-removing this I had to cut the hook off. Save yourself time and trouble. Hacksaw this off before starting the new installation. Its junk steel and after 1/3rd cutting you can snap it off with a sharp rap from a handy wrench.

The next difficulty is the clamp on hooks for the exhaust pipe. It has to be stretched open, then closed back up and the bolt threaded in. WHen you open and close this it twists a little so lining up the bolt is trick. I had to clamp it closed with long nose vise grips, then find the threaded holes.

Hold the new crossmember up to approximate where the exhaust clamp will go, then get its bolt threaded before doing anything else.

Also, the crossmember has two sets of holes. You will use the round ones not the obround ones.

Once you have everything in place, start getting the rubber hangers inserted. These go over a lip to minimize slipping off, but it makes removal tough (especially in cramped quarters). So try to ut them on only once. Spray the holes with WD-40 to help themn slip on - this will wash/burn away shortly upon running.

The old exhaust hook is really in the way and you will need a swivel and a truckload of patience to get the new bolt tightened once the hangers are in place.

Mine is now in place and secured in both directions. The muffler is a little further from the propshaft, but now I have a new bolt (from the exhaust clamp) near the propshaft. I think everything will be fine and will report back once we have some slush to test it on.

I saw this kit on line for about $165. My local dealer tried to charge me $229 (with tax) but I talked him down to $156.

OK, this is rather distressing. We just had a big wet snowfall last night so I got to try out the Volvo fix, installed in the post above.

It doesn't work.
Driving through wet slush and I still get rain squeal. It has a different pitch and volume so I can tell it changed but its still doing it.

Now you learned something.
I was waiting for you to come back
Don't post a fix until you try it, Volvo's BS crap doesn't work.
The only real fix is the JRL mod, remove the center resonator and replace with a straight pipe.

I'm not sure why yours is doing this.
This is 99% an R issue, most non Rs do not do this and the Volvo "fix" usually works on non Rs, You need to shim it away from the exhaust a bit more. Bend the bracket and use more washers

JRL, is this a potential problem on all P2 cars or only the ones with high pressure turbo's?

I was thinking of shimming the bracket. I got a phone call from Volvo Customer Care who said they will talk to my dealer and cover the cost of fixing this so I am dropping the car off tonight. My worry is that winter is winding down here in Buffalo so I may not get many chances to test any fix.

Frankly, there BS bracket "fix" didn't move the pipe down much and doesn't look all that much more supportive.

I am leaning toward the "JRL mod". How's the noise level when that's done? I really enjoy my super quiet car rides.

It is a potential problem with all turbos but component and assembly variations will make a lot of them not have the contact when splashed problem. For many that do have the problem, loosening and adjusting the pieces and tweaking the rubber hanger pins down is all that is needed to give the clearance needed for the pipe to move over when splashed momentarily and not touch the driveshaft.
I have not seen the problem with XC70's myself but once. Maybe the extra ground clearance changes the splash and the water strikes and cools the pipe differently and it moves another direction.

The other thing to note about this is that it is harmless and only a noise for a few seconds.

That bracket has two uses: one is to change the support to attempt to keep the pipe down and the other is to repair a rusted off rubber support pin.

Yes, I seem to have a more extreme case of rain-squeal-itis.

It may be truly harmless but it is really massively intolerable. I mean the noise is so incredibly loud it could wake the neighbors as I drive by. Seriously. I used to play heavy metal guitar and THIS volume hurts my ears. It drowns out my aftermarket stereo amp and sounds like a nails on a chalkboard, only as loud as a 747.

sigh......I used to run Thrush Glass Packs for that cool loud engine sound back in my hot rod days. Now, I want peace and quiet as I drive to work, listening to birds chirping and gravel spraying.

OK, so I am going to drop this off at the dealer. Frankly, I wasn't expecting such a quick response from Volvo Customer Care and I was very pleased by their concern. I was thinking I would shim the bracket myself and if that didn't work I would run the JRL-mod growl exhaust. But I will wait and see what the delaer can do.

I'll type up some notes for them, suggesting a couple things. They are a good dealership but not a lot of people seem familiar with this problem. I even gave them the TSB and they were confounded.

Just spoke to my dealership. They offered to send me a digital picture but I trusted their verbal explanations:

The old score mark from the muffler lip isn't fresh looking so it is assumed its not rubbing there anymore. The new clamp bolt created a new score mark so the suspicionis that the bolt supplied by Volvo's fix caused a new rubbing problem.

They are cutting the bolt down as the fix.

I should have the car this afternoon and we are expecting a small snowstorm so I get to test it out tonight.

If it fixes it, great
I've never heard of a plain Jane AWD having this issue
My mod is VERY subtle, you can barely hear the exhaust note. At idle you hear a teenie bit of a note and at full throttle, that's it
