My timing belt was done about two years and 20K ago by PO at Swedish Auto Service Austin Texas.
I am getting random misfire codes and CVVT P1332. As I was replacing the CVVT solenoid I noticed that while my timing marks were not at 12 o'clock they were close enough that i could count the teeth between the marks and the notches.
I placed arrows at both the timing notches and the marks. The exhaust cam notch seems to be four teeth away from the timing mark while the intake valve seems to be 5 almost six teeth away. I realize this is not the actual way to check the timing marks but as a quick method am i interpreting these marks correctly it seems as if my exhaust cam has skipped a couple of teeth. That would explain the codes and the soft misfiring at idle I was experiencing.
Anybody?
Is my timing belt off a tooth or two?

IMO, these cars are so precision, I'd bite the bullet and Line all the marks up..This way you will know for sure and won't be laying in your bed or smoking cigarettes wondering " I wonder if"... I just went thru this. I bought one of these with a Pulled head and a box of parts. I spent hours and hours rechecking timing marks and wiring chasing a Skip...I had compression, fuel, spark and still it was felt like it was running on 4 cyls... Everytime I checked the timing marks they were Dead Nuts on... I had the #5 and #4 Coils reversed by mistake because of the way I had the #5 Coil pack oriented so I just plugged the harness up as it was loomed...1-6.. So if I were you, Line your CRANK up to its mark, Line your Cams up to their marks.. I'd also check the Orientation of your Camshafts @ the opposite end...The Intake slot should be ABOVE the Horizon ( the split where the camshaft cover meets the head) and the Exhaust slot should be BELOW the horizon. Check your marks once you've done this...If you are NOT lined up then you may consider changing your belt or tensioner if you've jumped timing.. Just my 2 cents...

On VVT engines like yours you should pass the timing mark of the crank to the block and turn until the cams have moved forward 90 degrees, then turn counterclockwise until it is aligned again. This is necessary to align the marks on VVT motors

So the answer to my question is that it isnt possible to determine whether my timing has jumped by just looking down at the marks as they are with the timing belt cover off?

I concur with the other members....once you have your Cams @ 12:00 turn them to 3:00 then back to 12:00. This unloads the VVT spring tension. Look at your Cams and see if they are both @ 12:00. Then for validity, I'd also check to make sure the Crank is on IT's mark just in case.. ALL 3 marks should be lined correctly on their references per procedure...(BTW that procedure my man posted is one of the best ones I've seen.) just my 2 cents...
