P0442 code

Post by taylor98v70xcharris »

Hello, first time poster long time reader, very helpful site. Anyway im the owner of a 98 v70xc and for the past three months iv been getting the p0442 error code. I know its a small evap leak but i was just wondering what are some things i could start checking? Iv replaced most of the vacume line (ran out of line :( ) and the "J" hose on the charcoal canister is fine. What else could it be?
Thanks taylor

Have you looked at your filler cap - a poorly sealing cap will set an evap code. (Sorry if this sounds like an unnecessary note)
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

Purge valve OK?
The fastest and most thorough way is to have the car smoked for vacuum leaks

I've been having the P0442 code for quite a while. I got a new OEM gas cap ($26 :o ) and reset the check engine light. It came back in two days. I am getting it smoke tested next. Research has shown it could be: gas cap, J-hose cracked at canister (on top of fuel tank), purge valve, small leak in any vac hoses, mini hole in fuel filler neck, even a MAFS. so i am getting it smoked and will report my findings next week!

All great advice, thanks all. Yeah changed the gas cap and most of the vac lines and checked the "J" hose they all seem to be fine. I hope its not a hole in my filler neck, that doesnt look fun to change. What would a smoke test coust me? just an hour of labor maybe?

about an hour of labor or so, my family's shop usually charges about 50-60 for a full smoke test.

I've always been wary of this because of the heat/spark going on around the engine while spraying it. I'm no chemist, so perhaps it's unfounded. Anyone know for sure? Is propane better?

Hmmmmm.....I have a fog machine we used ONE halloween...I might want to try it. Any downside to sucking unknown chemical vapors into your vacuum lines?
