Which spark plugs for a 2001 XC70?

Post by chrisjimvolvo »

It's time to change spark plugs on my 2001, xc70.
Any advice on best plugs to use? I've seen and heard all sorts of horror stories.
Thanks, for any help.

Jim

I also confirm for experience...I was skeptical off the "volvo only" claims and bought the Bosch units sold by most of the site sponsors...and in our T5 (different engine) they gave nothing but issues with misfires and rough running...sucked up my pride, got the volvo specifics...and never had an issue again.

Dont' make my mistake!

And I just looked in my 98' S70 T5 Volvo manual- it says: Champion RC8PYP- went to the store, bought them, also no issues.

IMO, buy Volvo brand plugs. They aren't too expensive and adds a bit of insurance to your peace of mind.

I have a hard time with $8+ per plug vs. $1.81 for Bosch Copper Plus from IPD. I just changed out the Volvo plugs on my 2002 XC at 109k, not because it ran bad, but just to see if new plugs would make a difference. They are marked 684 and 6 on the insulator. I don't know the history of the car so for all I know they're original. They appear to be platinum plugs, possibly from Denso. Their color was good, greyish tan. Bosch didn't make it run any worse. If better, I can't tell if it's real or the placebo effect. Local indie Volvo-only shop says platinums don't hold up to the turbo. He uses NGK BKR5E for those turbo owners who don't insist on Volvo plugs. They're a different heat range (5) than the heat range 7 of the plugs I put in, as spec'd by IPD. What's a fella to do? If the Bosch last and perform for the recommended 30 to 36k replacement interval, I'll report back, because a factor of 5 is a big savings. IPD has platinums for the XC for $3.
