SRS light on

Im not sure why mine is on since I just got the car, where can I start looking im not sure where all of the air bag connectors are.

There are 4 SRS devices. The steering wheel air bag, the passengers side air bag above the glove box, and both front seat belts in the reel assemblies.

You have SIPS on your car but that is not electronically triggered.

The SRS control module is located under the center console behind the shifter.

The most common failure point is the clock spring connecter in the steering wheel. DO NOT try to use an ohm meter to try to test the devices, that can cause them to trigger.

After a bit of research I found out that if one of your seatbelts is difficult to get out that it might be that it had been triggered. I am fairly sure the passenger side front of my car has been in a slight accident before my ownership. That side seat belt is rough to get out at times and usually has to be pulled out slow and loosened up and pulled again etc. to get it all the way out to wear. Volvo states you need to replace both sides to clear the code, is this just a money racket?

Without specific codes all we can do is guess. Normally, an accident that triggers any of the electronically controlled devices triggers all of them simultaneously. I messed up and didn't have one of the airbags plugged back in all the way and hooked the battery back up. That triggered the SRS error but VOL-FCR cleared it after I plugged the airbag back in properly.

What about if you just bought a car and the light is on.
Where do you start? Dealership to scan, dealership to clear code? $100+ each way?

I have a similar self induced problem with the SRS light being on. I switched out my driver's side seat yesterday with one that wasn't hammered from 316K miles of driving and also the replacement had heated seats, my 2000 V70 did not originally. The donor seat came out of a 1998 V70 and there were 2 connectors on my wire harness that had no connection on the 1998 seat. I wanted to make sure the seat worked power wise before figuring those out, but now have the light on. One of the sets of wire goes up to the inside of the seat on the side and the other goes to the seatbelt receiver. Any ideas how to resolve this issue? thanks, Rich

My SRS light on too but I cannot read the codes from OBD unit...
I put the pin in B-5 port, press the button for cca 1 sec but nothing happens... It looks like I have in the B box 4 ports that should be active but only the B-2 port responds and gives error codes...

Do you have any ideas what could I do?

Hey I was wondering if you got this one resolved, I done the exact same thing removed the seat turned ignition on. Do I need to take it to a dealer and have it reset?

The SrS system on the 1998 and 2000 models changed considerably. My 1999 was the first year for SIPS where the seat air bag is fired by the SRS controller and not the seat sensor so the wiring is not compatible.

You need a high end scanner like the AUTEL 500 or up series to reset the SRS.

I think that several eBay Vag-Com cable sellers actually include VOL-FCR with he cable these days. You can usually set up windows to have USB emulate a Com 1 serial port which is good since few if any laptops have an actual RS-232 port on them anymore. VOL-FCR will tell you what is wrong and you can try to reset it and see if it holds. There is also some freeware that interfaces with the ELM327 chip based cables but you need to be selective on which ELM327 chip the cable is based on. Going the dealership or independent shop route gets expensive fast if you need to pay for a scan and it reports a problem. You then need to pay for another scan and reset after you fix the issue. Some of the higher end OBD-II scanners can deal with stuff like ABS and SRS but the alternative methods are much cheaper. The stuff like VOL-FCR is a one trick pony though and it has no utility for cars other than '94-'98 Volvos that are equipped with OBD-II.
