Successful ETM Fix!

Post by carlosR »

Hello I am new here but really like this site. Anyway I just returned from an 8 hour round trip to the nearest Volvo dealer. My codes were uploaded and surprise; a radiator fan fix too. I was apprehensive about the dealer because I have heard way too many horror stories but everything went fine and they even washed my car! At first, the first couple of blocks, the car sounded rough still but after a couple of hundred interstate miles it idles great. One downer of the trip, coming down a mountain pass I was smoked by a little Jetta!

Were you coming out of Glacier or over by Bigfork? Certainly not from Libby?

I came back thru Glacier a couple weeks ago, I live in CDA. I've tons of relatives on the northshore of Flathead lake.

Hi I was coming over Lookout Pass on the return from Spokane. That Jetta was taking it to the limit. What are you driving?

One update on the "fix", first it really works. The other is that my T5 is beastly now, I mean this car wants to go! Anyway it's fun again but like learning to drive a new Volvo, much more aggresive car.

I used to have a '99 C70 HP, and NOTHING would pass me, unless I wanted it to. I made a couple trips over to Helena and got her up to 136 mph. I was told I could a special chip to go faster, but you know what??

Who needs it? Even in Montana back then (Prima Facia), 136 will still get you thrown in jail.

After Volvo decided NOT to redesign the ETM, and while they were still blaming the owners for the part failure (cheap gas and dirty air filters), I dumped the lemon, because as you know very well .... the towing distance between dealer garages out here is cost prohibitive. We need a reliable vehicle, and Volvo is NO LONGER worthy of the reputation they once had.

I just got my volvo t5 s70. It has an etm.... I'm just waiting for it to fail. I'm gona go get the reflash next month. It sux that volvo wouldn't do the right thing by these etm's. Anyways... as far as cleaning them, I called the dealer and I'm not sure if they are lying to me, but if I take my etm off and clean it they say that it has to be reprogramed to the ecu?? Is this true, and if thats the case how do I clean it myself? I'm not paying 400dollars to have it cleaned, thats stupid.

I do not believe that to be true. If it goes back on the vehicle it was programmed to, everything should be fine.

Cleaning, from what I hear, is about a 3 hour job, and you must use their recommended cleaning fluid, others may do damage in the sensor/circuitry. A bit of a pain to get in and out, I hear.

Maybe there is some info at www.VEVEDvolvo.org in the FAQ or try www.VolvoXC.com in the 1997-2000 V70XC forum.
