I know a lot of Volvo owner use Mobil 3309 as ATF but it is not a synthetic fluid.
I found Red Line has a fully synthetic ATF called "D4 ATF". And the website states as following:
Mobil ATF 3309, JWS 3309, Toyota T-IV and T-III,
(96-'97 Supra Turbo, '98 Supra, '00 on Echo, Celica, '01-'03 Prius, '01-'03 Prius, '02-'05Camry and 4-cyl. Solara, Rav 4-4WD '01-'04 Highlander, Rav4, '03-'04 Sequoia, Tundra, Tacoma 2.7L, 3.4L, '03-'04 4-Runner w/4 speed,'03 Land Cruiser, '05 Tacoma)
(Volvo '01 to '04 C70, '01 on S40, V40, S60, S60R, '99 on V70, V70R and XC70 w/AW50AWD or AW55-50SN transaxle)

It seems the price is far more expensive than Mobil 3309 and close to the OEM fluid. Anyone tried this ATF? Is it safe to use on Volvo?
Another ATF Choice?

I didn't like it. After a few weeks it felt like regular Mobil JWS3309
I still like this one best. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/atf.aspx

Hmm So we actually have three different ATF for these cars?

Depending on the condition of your transmission and frequency of service you can: Drain and Fill, DYI Flush with all three or use Swepco as it will have the most complete additive package to keep a worn of almost dead transmission alive. 20W 714 Swepco.dongwenxuan wrote:Hmm So we actually have three different ATF for these cars?

Lots of Non synthetic choices out there. Almost every parts store now has a "global" fluid that will cover JWS3309. I think O'Rielly's has a synthetic global. I won't use any mineral based or non synthetic as their spec are only held up by the additive package which generally doesn't withstand the test of time. The additive package is a small portion of the fluid. Once it is depleted you are left with the base stock. That's why I like a fully synthetic base stock with a long lasting additive package. You should look at the specs for anything you use.
Always consider
1. What is the recommended service life?
2. What is the VI (Viscosity index is the lubricants ability to stay in its designed viscosity range)?
3. What guarantees, in writing, are provided?
4. What are the flow rates at -40 and 100C?
5. What is the cost vs performance of the lubricant.
6. What are the wear scar dimensions?
I have never tried the Swepco that was mentioned. It seems to be mineral based but the other poster seems to like it. If you try it ,let us know how it does long term.
Also - make sure to have a strong magnet in your drain plug. The amount of metal slag in used transmission fluid is large and does damage that no fluid can protect from (as the metal slag is normally taller than the protective oil film under load and pressure.) I don't have any transmission service life data but in commercial duty machines a machine with a sufficient magnet to catch slag provides a significant increase in the serviceable life of the machine. In high load situations the length of service can be up to 8 times longer.

I've been using 714 20W for over a decade and Swepco does not advertise as they do not need to due to it's customer base and then some!
