240 vs 940 wagon

Post by jav10 »

I'm looking for a '92 or a '93 240 wagon or a '93, '94 or '95 940 wagon. Which model and/or year is better overall? I want RWD, 4cyl (no turbo), auto--no 5 or 6 cyl. What mileage limits should I place on the car I'm looking for? I have KellyBB prices for both--what should I pay relative to the BB? Where can I find for sale listings other than craigslist? I own an '84 240 sedan with 170,000 miles and I love it. I'm in Bremerton, WA. I know I don't want an East Coast car. Thanks, JAV10

I enjoyed the 740/940s. They are wider and easier to work on from my past experience.
Driver seats in the 240s were getting worse in later years and the upper foam fell apart.
The 240 design is dated cosmetically mechanically and electronically.
More thought was put into the 740/940 platform, at it handled well.
They share the same engine and transmission. Don't be afraid of the turbo.
Both my 740 wagons made it to 300,000 and both were bought at the 175,000 mile mark.
Search the local ads to see what the market will bear, then go looking.

I had an '83 240 sedan which I loved, so I can relate to where you are coming from. In comparison, my '94 940 has:
1. slightly more power
2. better safety features (ABS, airbags, SIPS)
3. better amenities (better air conditioner, stereo system and electric windows).
4. A more durable engine-- or so I'm told--with oil squirters for lubrication

I really love both cars. I like the styling of both of them.
1994 Volvo 940: 189,000 miles.
2008 Mustang GT convertible: 10000 miles. The garage queen.

I have a 240 and a 740 and I love them both but for different reasons.

My 240 is my old girl, slow to accel, slow to turn and it slows me down too. My blood pressure drops, I enjoy the view a bit more. People turn and look and remember back to when their hippie-wannabe parents drove them around in a 240.

My 740 gets me to work quickly, handles swiftly, and doesn't offer me one bit of that "I'm driving an old classic" feel.

Some days I need to haul ass and some days I need to relax.

If I could only have one, I'd take the 240.
