Windshield coating, or tinting, or laminated

Post by Xcellr8 »

A couple of issues to clear up first.

First, sorry for barage of postings lately. My daughter drives this car and she lives out of state so I only get to see the S60 every now and then. Just saw it this past week and had lots of questions that she did not know. Found this forum and you guys are great...really great....sources of informaton.

Second, that brings me to my second issue, how do I access all that great information? I've tried searches, in this example, I tried "Windshield coating". The results only gave me "coating" saying it dropped Windshield. I tried putting + sign in front of the words, no difference. What am I doing wrong?

Finally the point of the post, if you again look at the photo of the windshield below you will notice that it is tinted and has a goldish tint at the top. What you can't see is that the windshield is not totally clear. When looking through it, not just at the top, but everywhere, there is a slight distortion, or imperfection, that makes you think the windshield needs to be cleaned. At first we thought it must be wax, but we have tried cleaning it with no difference. Now we are of the opinion that the imperfection is laminated into the glass or a special factory coating.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Is there a way to clear the view?

Thanks again,
Joe

This will probably won't be much consolation to you but I drive a 2001 v70 w/173k that I bought used and the windshield was terrible. Constant glare and no matter how hard we tried it just never looked clean. Finally replaced it with a new one and kicked myself for not doing it earlier. A little concerned because I did not replace with OEM because of $ but have had no problems at all with the replacement.

Many layers besides being curved will cause distortion (refraction really) and if the quality control guy is asleep or cheap untrained labor is used during final inspection...

Joe, here's more about searching MVS. Don't worry about posting lots, that's what the forum is for.

Motor1947, can you do me a favor and look down the length of the glass and report back if it's wavy? I had a windshield replaced on a V70 and the non-OEM glass (at less than half the price of OEM) had wavy distortions, even if you weren't looking down the length of it. I'd sit in the driver's seat and notice that objects seen out the right-front/A-pillar region of the glass were slightly distorted. I wasn't happy but the glass shop wouldn't redo it, said it's within parameters.

It wasn't a hazard, more of an annoyance.

Sorry for the off-topic nature of the above.
