1991 940 Turbo - No Overdrive

Post by gkjohnson »

To date I've managed to repair my 940 thanks to you all (brakes, e-brake, struts, strut mounts), so thank you for all the posts and pictures.

The Red Baron is not shifting into Overdrive, the Overdrive button on the shifter does illuminate but doesn't affect the transmission. The light was coming on intermittently prior to this event. Is this a Overdrive Switch issue or Neutral Safety Switch...no clue and no experience with either failing before. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

Thank you for the insight. I am familiar with the relays in the console above the shifter but don't know which relay does what and don't have documentation for the car. I can check with Chilton as i have an online subscription and have no idea where the solenoid would be...do you?

Thanks,
Greg

Is this a 91 940 SE or just a regular 940 Turbo? The 91 940 SE is wired just like a 90 760. Is your fuse panel on the end of the dash next to the driver door or behind the ashtray?

Hi and thanks for the response, The Red Baron she is a regular Turbo with the fuse panel behind the ashtray.

Thanks,
Greg

I've replaced the Overdrive Relay with no improvement. I have noticed the Overdrive "Light" randomly coming on and will tackle the solenoid next.

I ended up replacing the relay, no joy. I just replaced the solenoid, not an easy job very difficult position to get a tool into....Success!

The OD is working however, the knockdown button randomly goes on, i can always hit the button on the shifter but but I think there is a short or ghost in the machine.
