Trade my '89 240 wagon for a '99 V70 xc?

I have had my ole' faithful since 2000. He was made in Sweden('89) and I brought him to the States when I moved here from Canada. This vehicle does NOT have A/C ( an it's mighty hot in NC) and the odometer is in metric. The tigerduck ( that's his name) also needs a main seal done on the transmission, is leaking oil majorly and well- much of the plastic on the inside is falling apart and cracking. Furthermore, it needs a paint job.
Now, I have found a '99 V70 cross country wagon with about 83,000 miles on it but am not sure if I should keep pumping money into my fine piece of metal or let it rest and get this other wagon?
I need some help here because most people laugh at Volvo's.

IIRC, the early AWD was quite troublesome, FWD is a better choice. OTOH, the miles on the car you are looking at are very low.

that would be a good mileage to buy at taking into consideration that they did the timing belt at 70k. whats the price of this cross country wagon? and how many miles does your old faithful have? sounds like you have some problems with the transmission. i mean if the cc has been well kept i would go for it considering the cost of what it would take to fix your older car. But if there really isn't nothing wrong with the cc then i would get it if that's what you really want.

My favorite place in the world RTP area! It is time to get a new start. If you are dumping money into the 240 en masse why not in the newer one? It is hot AND sticky there in the summer besides it would be nice for the occasional bad winter weather.

Here it is: The guy did say that two of the locks need to be pulled up manually. He will not come down on the price. Any advice would be great.

Don't be in a hurry! Go onto CList as people in the RTP area especially Cary take decent care of their cars. The year and mileage is such you may be starting to go through a lot of disposable parts if the previous owner did not do so already. Yes, the mileage is low but if it is stop and go and short distances than it is hard mileage. Weavers rating is either good or bad on Google and CityData.

These folks are great but a little ways but can be a great source to check out a use car you want to buy

DO NOT go to Weaver Motorsports.

I went to buy a car from there 5 years ago; the guy's a freaking idiot and his prices are way too high for cars that aren't in tip-top shape.

He wouldn't negotiate with me at all for a car with locks that didn't work and needed a timing belt in 5000 miles.

I would go with a FWD model as said above for reliability. I would give 1998 models a higher priority over 1999-2000 models in my search because there are less electrical problems; but if the electrical problems have been sorted, both are good models. 1999's are completely different under the hood from 1998's and the 850 models.

Thanks to everyone for their input and advice. I went and looked at a '96 850 wagon. Something told me it had issues. Besides, the cargo space seemed a lot smaller than what I have.
