'98 V70 Engine Swap

Being the resurrection season, I will be replacing the engine on my current daily driver -- '98 V70, FWD, non-turbo 5 speed.

There are some miscellaneous parts I intend to renew as a consequence of the swap (for example, the original clutch with 229K miles on it, a full ignition tune-up kit, ).

I also think it might be a good idea to renew the rear main seal.

Anybody think of any other parts I either should replace or will need to replace to make the swap happen? (I will do an engine oil and filter swap as well as a drain and refill of the manual transmission, which, as far as I know is still using the original transmission oil.)

I will be order a new water pump gasket, new thermostat gasket, and new o-rings & clips for the heater core/firewall connection.

Anything else I am likely to need?

PCV system, engine mounts and bushings.

PCV, done recently, will transfer over as well as the engines mounts and bushings which are all relatively new.

Have never replaced the hydraulic engine mounts but I do remember hearing they seldom go bad. Anybody have a contrary opinion?

I would also change the cam seals. The front seals are a bear to get to once the engine is in place. I have had several of the hydraulic mounts fail so replacement is a good idea. The mounts are a place where the parts quality is all over the place. They all look great coming out of the box but the Scan Tech and URO mounts have a terrible reputation.

I was about to say that when you pull the trans to replace the RMS, also replace the trans input shaft seal. But your car is a manual ...

There are two hydraulic mounts, buy the Hutchison (OEM) ones. I replaced these during an engine swap, even though they weren't leaking or crushed yet. Car rode just a little smoother when it was all done.

Well, my mechanic is into the swap now and was delayed due to some parts compatability issues that will be resolved tomorrow. He was amazed to find that at 229,000 miles the original clutch was "still good," i.e., had some wear left in it, not down to the rivets yet and said, but for a light glaze on the flywheel, it looked pristine. Here's hoping I made the right decision. . .

New engine, clutch and miscellaneous parts are in and the car is running smoothly. Delay was due to parts compatability issue on clutch kit supplied by a vendor. Mechanic reports smooth/trouble free running but he's keeping it through today to run it around a bit and check for any leaks/unanticipated problems. He's glad to have that bay freed up in his shop. I'll report on the results once I've had the chance to drive it. Thanks for help received from forum angels -- you know who you are. . .

Hurray!!!

I only hope the clutch lasts that long on my new car. There have been some reports of them failing due to faulty materials at only a few thousand miles.

Good luck with this one...hopefully many more miles still left in that car
