faulty Coolant Temp Sensor 1990 240 DL

Post by broke wagon »

I have a 1990 240 DL and I was wondering if a faulty coolant temp sensor could cause plugs to get covered with a black soot. I would think this sensor was only for the gauge on the cluster. I read on a response to a plug fouling problem which led to stalling that the sensor sends signals to the fuel system some how.
Thanks

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) does supply info to the ECU. If it is faulty it should set a fault code 1-2-3.

Have you checked for fault codes?

You can check the ECT with an ohmmeter or multimeter. Readings should be as in the attached:

Ignore the year as it is the same for your car.

Bill,
Thanks for the feed back. I haven't checked the codes. Before I read your response I took a look at my car and noticed the cold start injector was unplugged. I haven't taken it out for a test run yet, but I am willing to guess that might be the cause.

Hello Bill
I did get a fault code of 1-2-3. I also called IPD for some advice. They said the wiring harness that runs through the fire wall on the drivers side is known to cause problems. I still need to give that a good look. And also my ignition switch isn't working too well. You have to turn the key slightly to the left for the wipers and the radio. IPD also told me that could cause some problems. I still am going to give it a test drive in the morning and see how it goes.
thanks for the feed back
Glen
