Hey everyone. I picked this up yesterday and drove it back to DC from PA. 1998 V70R awd, just under 163k miles. A/C works pretty good. I rode pretty good on the way back. I don't even think I got to 80mph anyway. I got a lot of receipts for things that the previous owner had done maintenance wise.

There are already some things I need to do to it. Like un-ghetto rig the boost gauge from the previous owner. I am looking to probably get the mirror pod thing that viva sells since I despise pillar pods. Not as much as duct tape though... The key fob for the keyless entry has the loop broken off so you can't attach it to anything. I have to get the rest of the headlight wiper parts and put all of that back together. Can anyone confirm that the 850 and v70 of this year use the same headlight wiper parts? I looked on IPD and they said that they were compatible. One of the fog lights melted the back of the part you plug the harness into so I will be buying new fog lights probably. Especially since these are kind of beat up looking. It needs and upper engine torque mount. Going to flush the coolant since it is the dirtiest green/brown color I have ever seen before. I also want to swap the new coolant expansion tank I just put on my 850 into this car. Bleed the brake system and add some stainless braided lines. The brake fluid looks pretty bad as well. I messed around with the hood latches until my patience ran out today. Hood still only opens on one side unless I wedge something under the corner of the grill. Went out this morning and there was a flat tire. I put 40psi in around 1pm this afternoon and made sure all the others were the same. Went back out about 20 minutes ago and its already lost 20psi. Didn't see or notice any nails, screws or other punctures. Who knows I suppose it could be a bent wheel as well. If so I have a brand new set of Persus wheels with brand new tires in my basement. If my allergies weren't so bad I would still be out there digging around underneath. I did put my super special rubber mat thing from my 850 into this one already. Ok its not special, anyone can buy one from Weathertech.

That is all I can really think of/remember or have found yet that need addressing. Now on to the pictures. I am sure I will be around asking questions. Should be getting tags tomorrow and my safety inspection done the next day along with that coolant flush. As well as having my friend give the car a good look over.

Just to be sure about this. Since I see these plugs unplugged on both sides of the car I assume that they are for the wiper motors. Am I correct?

You can get remote cases on Ebay.
The connectors are for headlamp wipers. The internal breakers go bad and the motors stop at odd places and then move again with the next key cycle.

they certainly aren't like that. They supposedly work according to the previous owner, he just didn't like them. I can appreciate having them during a snowstorm. Not that we had any this year. And probably won't for a good while. I just kind of like them. I haven't looked far enough to see if they actually work or if the washer system is still there. If I bought the deletes, I would buy a wing and probably get the whole car re-sprayed. Just don't want to spend all that money right now. Especially when I don't know what else it needs that is more important. I think he gave me everything except one of the nuts to hold the arm on.

By the way: Is it just my computer or is only about 2/3 of each picture showing?

Hello again, a little update and some questions.

We found a couple issues with this beast:

I had the cooling system drained and refilled on Tuesday. The coolant turned almost the same color again, just slightly greener. I am going to go back and have a flush done to hopefully clean it further. There is a tiny, tiny head gasket seep, not even enough to leak. But there is a slight bit of crusty calcification on about 1/4" of the head you can see between 2 intake runners. There is no white smoke visible under the hood or in the exhaust and the temp gauge stays at and has not gone over the 3 o'clock position. I am going to run some stop leak through it when I flush the coolant again. I thought maybe the radiator might be bad possibly. I checked the trans fluid last night and it looked and smelled like regular atf, red and nasty.

One of the Nivomats has a very slight seep to it. I found out which model I need already if it gets to that. I guess lucky that they aren't the MOST expensive ones. Still $260 a piece....

Also I need to get a serpentine belt. Are the ones from IPD and FCP good enough to use? Or should I just get one from the dealer? As far as the drive belt is concerned.

Apparently hood latches for Volvos are next to impossible to find... Can anyone tell me if one from a 94 850 would work? They look to be the same but just the brackets that they mount to are different.

My leaking tire issue was from a giant blister on the inside sidewall. I am thankful that it didn't blow out on the highway on the way home. I also am glad I had that set of wheels and new tires sitting in my basement that never went on my 850 to swap out.

Please, please, please don't use stop leak.

Buy a cooling system pressure tester and find the leak. Sometimes for the pressure test its better to use straight distilled water as its less viscous than coolant mix and makes it easier to find the leak.

Looks like a great new ride. Hope all the little issues will work out.
I am heading to a pull-it place Saturday to get some stuff for my 98 and could look for hood latches if needed.
Let me know what you are looking for and I'll see what they have.

Shane, the hood latches were there when I was. There were several 854/855's there, too, but as previously mentioned I think they're a bit different. I'll bring the 10mm socket ;)

Thanks guys. I have an 850 sitting outside my house right now. Its "totaled", so I am still dealing with the insurance co. This weekend I should have time to try it out.

I think the world could do without a few kittens. I want to use it to fix the leak/seep/whatever that was already found.

The way I see it anytime you use stop leak you run a risk of clogging something that shouldn't be clogged. Whether that's an acceptable risk or not is up to you of course. I think since it's an R its worth replacing the part(s) rather than adding nasty goop to the system. I had some "OK" experiences with stop leak until it caused a blockage in a 1.8T VW and cracked the head. Its anecdotal experience of course, but I think its worth noting. I'm not a major fan of kittens but if I can save a kitten and a head replacement at the same time, I'll go for it :)
